That's All She Wrote for Pittsburgh Area PLs

Previously I reported that the NS Pittsburgh Line resignaling project had been completed.  Well I can now confirm that NS has also removed the signaling on the Fort Wayne Line between CP-PENN and EAST CONWAY in addition to re-locating the interlocking at CP-WOOD at Homewood Jct, PA.  Chief amoung the casualties was the famed CP-LEETS with its pair of 3 and 4 track PRR PL gantries and pneumatic point machines :-(

If that wasn't enough the pedestals at CP-ISLE were removed and, like I said, CP-WOOD was relocated about a mile to the west and rebuilt as a simple crossover without any secondary track connection.

Anyway, if you are looking for PRR position lights in Pennsylvania, you pretty much need to look elsewhere, like Ohio or Long Island.

  1. Mike,
The entire NS mainlines around Pittsburgh and east to Harrisburg is all done. CP-Penn, CP-Bell were completed on Sunday 9-29-2019. All associated automatic block signals were removed on the Conemaugh Line (new vader signals 75) and the Fort Wayne Line to CP-Leets.
So, it is all CS without wayside block signals and new style color lights from Harrisburg west to Pittsburgh-Conway-Alliance to Cleveland.
This past Monday, 10-14-2019, the rest of the Conemaugh Line was cutover from CP-Kiski to CP-Conpit. The position light signals at CP-Leech, CP-Alum and CP-Toms retired and replaced with new color lights. CP-Apollo, which was new style color lights was relocated about a half mile west. Old CP-Apollo still had the EB and WB home signals spaced far apart from the time it was a full interlocking (dual crossovers between 2 main tracks and interlocked connection to the Apollo Branch). The new CP-Apollo acts as a "hold out" signal to split the long block between CP-Leech and CP-Salts. The new signals are side-by-side bidirectional and located near the Route 66 grade crossing for easier access by the signal department.
Far as I know the last PRR PL signals in the Pittsburgh area would be at CP-Brown in Brownsville, PA.

As always, enjoy reading your signal news and reports.

  2. As of a couple of days ago, the distant signals for CP Roshester on the Cleveland Line at Vanport, PA were still there. The eastbiound signal is notably for being one of the few instances locally of a two head PL with a circular lower head instead of the far more common clipped head.
